The Origin of the original Mezuzah

Written on the Mezuzah parchment are 713 words from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, which are more commonly known as the Shema and Vayaha, respectively. Within this verse, there is a literal commandment to "inscribe them upon the doorposts of your home and upon your gates." 

Shema Yisrael (Hear, O Israel): The Lord is our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord, your God, with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, and with all of your means. And these words, which I command you this day, should be upon your heart. And you shall teach them to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your home and when you walk on your way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be a sign between your eyes. And you shall inscribe them upon the doorposts of your home and upon your gates (Deut. 6:4-9).
