JOHN BROWN (of HADDINGTON)

"Eighteenth century Scotland produced many noted ministers, scholars, and educators, but none greater, or so greatly loved in his own day or afterwards, as John Brown of Haddington."- Joel Beeke.

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

The Absurdity and Perfidy of All Authoritative Toleration of Gross Heresy, Blasphemy, Idolatry, Popery, in Britain: In two letters to a friend in which the doctrine of the Westminster Confession of Faith relative to Toleration of a False Religion, and the power of the civil magistrate about sacred matters; and the nature, origin, ends and obligation of the National Covenant and Solemn League are candidly represented and defended.(1797, 1803 edition)

Here Brown deals with three major Reformation attainments(anti-tolerationism, establishmentarianism and the obligations of lawful covenants as they biblically bind posterity) that Satan has always been especially concerned to overthrow -- in every major demonic move to open the floodgates of lawlessness, anarchy and misrule. Fletcher, in the preface to the 1797 edition, relates this truth as it comes to bear on various religious professors, stating,

Papists were enemies to our covenants because they were a standard lifted up against their system of abominable idolatries. Episcopalians were enemies to them, because they were a standard lifted up against their anti-scriptural church-officers and inventions of men in the worship of God. Some Presbyterians are enemies to them in our day through ignorance of their nature and ends; and others through fear of being too strictly bound to their duty (Cited in Johnston,Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 486).

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

A Brief View of the Figures; and Explication of the Metaphors, Contained in Scripture (1812)

Macfarlane called Brown "perhaps the most remarkable divine that our country has produced" (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 485).

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

The Christian Journal; Or, Common Incidents, Spiritual Instructors (1795)

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

A Compendious History of the Church of Scotland (1784)

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

A Compendious View of Natural and Revealed Religion (1817)

In seven books. Book 1: Of the standard of all religion, the law of nature, in its foundation and contents; the insufficiency of the light of nature to render a man truly virtuous and happy; the possibility, desirableness, necessity, propriety, reasonableness, credibility, divine authority, properties, and parts of that revelation which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Book 2: Of God, the Author, Object, and end of all religion, in His perfections, persons, purposes, and works. Book 3: Of the bonds of religious connection between God and man, the covenants of works and grace, in their origin, parties, parts and administrations in time and through eternity. Book 4: Of Christ, the Mediator of the covenant of grace, in His person, offices, and states. Book 5: Of the blessings of the covenant of grace, effectual calling, justification, adoption, sanctification, spiritual comfort, eternal glory. Book 7: Of the dispensation of the covenant of Grace by means of the law, the gospel, and ordinances thereof. Book 8: Of the new covenant society or church, in her constitution, members, offices, and government. A new edition carefully revised and improved with the author's last additions and corrections, 600 pages. This book has recently been published under the title:The Systematic Theology of John Brown of Haddington.

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

Essay Towards an Easy, Plain, Practical and Extensive Explication of the Assembly's Shorter Catechism(1859, from the sixth Edinburgh edition)

The author has taken great care to correct, enlarge, and improve this editionof his catechism, particularly by adding a great number of Scripture texts in order to more clearly elucidate and confirm different points of doctrine and practice. 356 pages.

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

General History of the Christian Church, from the Birth of our Saviour to the present Time.Containing A succinct Account of external Events, prosperous or calamitous; the State of Learning; the State of Practical Religion; and the Disputes, Heresies, and Sects, that have troubled the Christian Church, in each Century. With An Appendix, containing the History of Philosophers, Deists, Socinians, Arminians, Anabaptists, Quakers, Moravians, etc. To which is subjoined, A List of Errors, especially since the Reformation (1771, 2 volumes)

The importance of this book is noted in Brown's first sentence to the preface, "To peruse history as a Christian, is to view every event as the work of God; -- As a practical verification of the doctrines, promises, threatenings, or predictions of his word; -- and as an excitement to faith in, gratitude towards, and conformity to him, as our God and Redeemer." A fine set by one of the giants of the Reformed faith! 760 pages.

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

The Gospel Ministry: An Address to Ministers and Students of Theology (1864)

"The most luminous and weighty appeal on the subject, one in the highest degree deserving the study of every minister, and of every candidate for the sacred office," writes Aydelott, in the preface.

The final pages give a brief chronology of noted events from the creation (about 6000 years ago according to Brown) to the author's day.

This book, Brown notes, taken together with his Sacred Topology; or A Brief View of the Figures and Explication of the Metaphors Contained in Scripture, "form a kind of systematic explication of the whole Old and New Testament."

It is also interesting to note that Brown could read and translate in 10 different languages, being entirely self-taught, though his language studies "were subordinate to his favourite study of divinity, in which he became eminently skilled, as well as in history, both ecclesiastical and civil" (Darling,Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 451). 411 pages.

THE PSALMS OF DAVID IN METRE (i.e. the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650): Allowed By the Authority of the Kirk of Scotland, and of Several Branches of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. With Notes, Exhibiting the Connection, Explaining the Sense, and for Directing and Animating the Devotion (1844 edition published by Robert Carter [New York])John Brown of Haddington (annotations). Psalter by Francis Rouse, the Westminster Divines, and the Scottish General Assembly (from 1646-1650)

This is the Psalter (less Brown's notes, which were added later) mandated, approved and used (for public and private worship) by the Westminster Assembly and all those who covenanted to uphold the Biblical Reformation that these Divines proclaimed. The text of the Scottish Metrical Psalmswas authorized by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1650. The notes added by Brown are suitable for explaining the Psalm before singing and are a great aid to understanding and worship (whether public, family or private). This is a primary source document of Reformation; not to be missed by those serious about the Reformed faith -- and worshipping God in spirit and in truth. There are few things in life as pleasing and enjoyable as communing with Christ through the singing of His Psalms!
