BRUCE, ROBERT (William Cunningham, editor)

Sermons by the Rev. Robert Bruce, Minister of Edinburgh (1843 edition)

"Robert Bruce... was one of the most distinguished men whom Scotland has ever produced, and rendered invaluable services to his Church and country... Andrew Melville, his illustrious coadjutor in that great struggle in which they both suffered so much, describes him as a 'hero adorned with every virtue, a constant confessor, and almost martyr of the Lord Jesus.' Livingstone says,'Mr Robert Bruce I several times heard, and, in my opinion, never man spake with greater power since the Apostles' days'(Preface). The subtitle also notes that these sermons were "Reprinted from the original edition of 1590 and 1591 with collections for his life by Robert Wodrow." The print is reset in the common times font of the nineteenth century and the text "Englished" for easy reading. Calderwood, who was personally acquainted with Bruce, played a major role in preserving the information used by Wodrow in the Life of Bruce (which consists of 201 pages). Many startling instances of God's supernatural power at work in Bruce are recounted in Wodrow's introductory biography, under the section titled "Some Singular Passages of His Life."

BRUCE, MICHAEL

Good News in Evil Times For Fainting Believers (1708)

"These forgoing sermons were preached by Mr. Michael Brucein his best days, when in prison(suffering as a Covenanter for the crown rights of King Jesus, under the false charge of sedition--RB)," notes the final sentence in this book. These three sermons cover Jeremiah 45:1-5 and Psalm 140:12-13 (two sermons) andwere preached for the encouragement of believers during the most trying of times(when believing the whole counsel of God could cost you dearly). 72 pages.

BURGESS, CORNELIUS

The First Sermon Preached to the Honorable House of Commons Now Assembled in Parliament at their Public Fast, Nov. 17, 1640

A beautifully clear facsimile copy of this amazing sermon, (published by order of the British House of Commons in 1641), exhorting this Parliament to "stand to the covenant" of God; by, "endeavouring of a further Sanction of, and stronger Guard about our true Palladium, the true Religion, already established among us; in the perfecting of the Reformation of it; in the erecting, maintaining, protecting, and encouraging of an able, godly, faithful, zealous, profitable, Preaching Ministry, in every Parish Church and Chapel throughout England and Wales; in interceding to the Kings sacred Majesty for the setting up of a Faithful, Judicious, and Zealous Magistracy, where yet the same is wanting, to be ever at hand to back such a Ministry: without either of which, not only the power of Godliness will sooner degenerate into formality, and zeal into lukewarmness; but Popery, Arminianism, Socinianism, Profaneness, Apostasy, and Atheism itself will more and more crowd in upon us, and prevail against us, do You all You can by all other means."

COVENANTED MINISTERS OF SCOTLAND

Sermons in Times of Persecution in Scotland (1880 edition)

This book (of 674 pages) records some of the most powerful sermons ever put into print, most being delivered during the "killing times" in Scotland. These faithful preachers were daily in danger of losing their earthly lives for their testimony to the truth of Christ's kingship (which they proclaim here) -- and many were eventually martyred for His covenanted cause. The original title of this book, instructive in itself, read (in part), "A Collection of Lectures and Sermons Preached upon Several Subjects, Mostly in the Time of the Late Persecution. Wherein a Faithful Doctrinal Testimony is Transmitted to Posterity for the Doctrine, Worship, Discipline and Government of the Church of Scotland against Popery, Prelacy, Erastianism, etc.... and a Sermon on the Breach of Covenant by Mr. John Guthrie."Each set of sermons in this book is prefaced with a helpful three to six page biographical notice. The following ministers are included (with the number of their sermons in this book noted in parentheses after their name):William Guthrie (17); Michael Bruce(3);John Weldwood (4); Richard Cameron(7 sermons and 1 lecture);Donald Cargill (7 sermons and 3 lectures); Alexander Peden(2);Alexander Shields (2 sermons and 1 lecture); John Livingstone(1 sermon and 1 sacramental discourse);John Welch(1 sermon and 1 sacramental discourse);John Guthrie(1). Includes illustrations and the original preface (written March 19, 1779) byJohn Howie (author of The Scots Worthies). An instructive and useful commemorative sermon, "A Third Reformation Necessary: or, The Piety, Principles, and Patriotism of Scotland's Covenanted Martyrs; With Application to the Present Times," by Kerr, preached on the bi-cententary of the covenanting struggle, is also included.Contains some of the most soul stirring preaching you may ever read!

PURITAN DIVINES

Puritan Sermons Before the English House of Commons(1640-1641)

This is a collection of Puritan sermons preached to "the Honourable House of Commons... Assembled in Parliament" in London at various times during the years 1640 and 1641. This volume includes: "The First Sermon, Preached to the Honourable House... at their Public Fast" byCornelius Burgess (Nov. 17, 1640); "Sions Joy" by Jeremiah Burroughs(Sept. 7, 1641); "A Peace-Offering to God" byStephen Marshall(Sept. 7, 1641); "The Love of Truth and Peace" byJohn Gauden (Nov. 29, 1640); andtwo other sterling examples of nation-directing second Reformation sermons. Burgess, in the final sermon, exposes the Popish and Jesuitical traitors in the land, while also demonstrating how their treason was the outgrowth of their false and wicked religion, as well as their hatred for God and the truths of the Reformation. These sermons to the civil authorities were an encouragement to further Reformation and played their part in rousing the civil ministers to their calling. They also assisted in laying some of the necessary groundwork which eventually led the parliament to call the Westminster Assembly. Furthermore, they helped to stir these governors to their duty of covenanting the land to Christ, which was later accomplished in theinternational swearing of the Solemn League and Covenant. Over 350 pages.

A Choice Collection of Very Valuable Prefaces, Lectures, and Sermons Preached Upon the Mountains and Muirs of Scotland In the Hottest Times of the Late Persecution By that Faithful Minister and Martyr of Jesus Christ the Reverend Mr. James Renwick (1776 ed.)

Another very rare item of over 600 pages. Carefully collected and faithfully transcribed from several manuscripts, these pages exhibit some of the reasons why Renwick sealed his testimony with his blood.Houston notes that these sermons were preached "in the Coventicles, in the fields, amidst all dangers and incidents of weather, and by night as well as by day." They set forth the amazing grasp of truth that this young martyr for Christ was granted. "Renwick's sermons," writes Hay Fleming, "show that he was a faithful preacher of the Gospel; and those who had realized in their own experience that it was the power of God unto salvation were anxious at all hazards to listen to the Word when proclaimed by such a devoted and fearless messenger" (Story of the Scottish Covenant in Outline[$C3.99 P; $14.00 HP]). Furthermore, Houston says of these sermons, "They were not prepared with any view to future publication; and the trying circumstances in which their devoted author was placed, wholly prevented any correction or revisal.Yet they contain not only remarkably clear expositions of the word, and a full exhibition of the scheme of salvation, but also many passages which, for searching application to the conscience, and moving eloquence, are unsurpassed in the discourses of eminent preachers either in ancient or modern times" (Life of Renwick, p. 17 [$C4.49 P; $19.00 HP]).
