BROOKS, THOMAS

The Mute Christian Under the Smarting Rod; With Sovereign Antidotes for Every Case: A Christian with an Olive Leaf in His Mouth, When Under the Greatest Afflictions, Trials, Troubles, and Darkest Providences; With Answers to Questions and Objections, Calculated to Promote Submission and Silence Under All the Changes that May Be Experienced in this World.(1811)

A Puritan look at the perplexing and sometimes disconcerting subject of dealing in a godly manner with those trials and afflictions which frequently beset the saints. In the preface toPrecious Remediesit is noted that he was among the leading Puritan preachers/authors and that "some few might even award him a topmost niche among the choicest spirits of the seventeenth century." 250 pages.

BAXTER, RICHARD

A Christian Directory: A Sum of Practical Theology and Cases of Conscience. Directing Christians How to Use Their Knowledge and Faith; How to Improve all Helps and Means, and to Perform all Duties; How to Overcome Temptations, and to Escape or Mortify Every Sin. In Four Parts: 1.) Christian Ethics (or Private Duties); 2.) Christian Economics (or Family Duties); 3.) Christian Ecclesiatics (or Church Duties); 4.) Christian politics (or Duties to Our Rulers and Neighbors).

Over 950 (8.5 inch by 11 inch) pages long, Dr. Timothy Keller calls this "the greatest manual on Biblical counseling ever produced." John MacAurthur writes, "We have long waited for a purely Biblical treatment of the spiritual ills and cures of men which is untainted by the views of psychology. Since Baxter lived about 200 years before psychology arrived, his deep work is completely void of its encroachment -- thankfully!"

BAXTER, RICHARD

A Treatise of Self-Denial

This item "is the work of Baxter that has been translated into the most number of different languages" (Kettler, Sept./97 letter).

BAYLY, LEWIS

The Practice of Piety (c. 1611, 1842)

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries this work was the most universally read English book on devotion next toPilgrim's Progress. Bunyan himself ascribes the commencement of his spiritual life in some measure to the perusal of this practical handbook on piety...First published in the early 1600's... by 1792, (it was in) its seventy-first English edition...(It has) appeared in most European languages, including Dutch (1620), French (1625), German (1692), and Polish (1647). New England Puritans even translated it into the Indian language used in Massachusetts (1665)...Bayly's puritan convictions brought him into frequent conflict... in 1621 he was imprisoned for some months for his aversion to theinfamous Book of Sports, and for other minor charges...Bayly's Practice of Pietyis replete with practical, Puritan guidelines on the pursuit of holy living." (Joel Beeke).

BROMHALL, ANDREW

How is Hypocrisy Discoverable and Curable? (1661, reprinted 1844)

BROWN (of Wamphray), JOHN

Christ: the Way the Truth and the Life (1839 edition)

"Brown's blending of doctrinal truth and Christ-centered piety is most clearly displayed in hisChrist: the Way the Truth and the Life. This is biblical, Reformed, Puritan spirituality at its best" (Joel Beeke).

BROWN, JOHN (of Wamphray)

A Pious and Elaborate Treatise Concerning Prayer; & the Answer of Prayer (1745 edition)

"The clear and Scriptural ardency of his piety from this well-know treatise is apparent" wrote Burns, concerning this title (Johnston,Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 342. The publisher’s preface notes that this wasthe mature work of one who had suffered much for Christ. They state it "is among his last works; which he wrote at the close of a long walk with God; and in exile; while he was in Holland about 20 years, from his banishment (Anno 1661) until he ended his days, and entered into the joy of the Lord...Moreover the gentleman, now a minister, who procured this practical treatise of prayer, in Holland, and brought it home, can attest that it is genuine; and though many pieces on the subject be come abroad before this, yet the intelligent Reader may find it is inferior to none, and in some respects, preferable to any of them." Sample chapters include: "The greatness of the sin of neglecting prayer, manifested, in 39 particulars;" "The Unregenerate are obliged to pray;" "The necessity and usefulness of family prayer, manifested:" "Some encouragements to prayer mentioned;" and much more. It is for works such as these that Johnston (inThe Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 339) says of Brown that "(h)e has been regarded (as) the most important theologian of the second period of Scottish Presbyterianism." Joel Beeke concurs, writing, "John Brown of Wamphray (1610-1679) has been rightly called the most important Scottish theologian of his day.He was especially gifted at merging profound doctrinal truth with warm Christ-centered zeal and godly piety.Samuel Rutherfordwrote of him, 'I always [had]... a great love to dear Mr. John Brown because I thought I saw Christ in him more than in his brethren.'" 308 pages.

BUNYAN, JOHN

The Pilgrim's Progress

"This deluxe edition of Bunyan's great work comes as near as possible to the 'ideal' -- with the original marginal notes and references from Scripture, both parts of theProgress, and a series of magnificent and evocative etchings by William Strang" (Banner of Truth catalogue). "It is a masterpiece of piety and genius; and will, we doubt not, be of standing use to the people of God so long as the sun and moon endure" (Toplady). 396 pages.

BURGESS, ANTHONY

Spiritual Refining (2 volumes, 1652 & 1654)

This is the only full, unedited, two volume set of this work presently available. Volume one is "A Treatise of Grace and Assurance. Wherein are handled: The Doctrine of Assurance; The Use of Signs in Self-examination; How true Graces may be distinguished from counterfeit; Several true Signs of Grace, and many false ones; The Nature of Grace under divers Scripture Notions or Titles, as Regeneration, The New-creature, the Heart of Flesh, Vocation, Sanctification, etc. Many chief Questions (occasionally) controverted between the Orthodox and the Arminians. As also many Cases of Conscience Tending to Comfort and confirm Saints and Undeceive and convert Sinners. Being 120 Sermons." Volume two is "A Treatise of Sin With its Causes, Differences, Mitigations and Aggravations. Also occasionally handling the Uprightness and Tenderness of a Gracious Heart; and therein discovering the nature of a misguided Conscience, as also of secret and unknown sins that the best men are guilty of, with Directions to the godly under their fears about them. Showing withal, that a strict scrutiny into a man's heart and ways, with a holy fear of sinning, doth consist with a Gospel-life of faith and joy in the Holy Ghost. All tending to Unmask counterfeit Christians; Terrify the Ungodly; Comfort and Direct the Doubting Saint; Humble Man; Exalt the Grace of God. In 42 Sermons."1120 pages.

Christ Crucified: Or, The Marrow of the Gospel, Evidently Set Forth in 72 Sermons on the Whole Fifty-third Chapter of Isaiah(1723, fourth edition, corrected)

The title continues: "Wherein the text is clearly and judicially opened, and a great many most apposite, truly spiritual, and very edifying points of doctrine, in a delectable variety, drawn from it; with choice and excellent practical improvements thereof. Wherein also several adversaries of the truth, asSocinians, Arminians, Arians, and Antinomians, are solidly and fully refuted. Besides, many errors in practice incident to professors, otherwise sound and orthodox in their opinions, are discovered;and many grave, deep, and very important cases of conscience, satisfyingly discussed." The preface, signed by Thomas Ridgley (and 22 others), notes that this work "equals, at least, if it does not exceed his other writings." This book aims to "prove contributive to the bringing you to a considerable growth in holiness." It contains an index (which was not available in earlier editions), enlarged print, and covers over 430 pages.

EDWARDS, JONATHAN

Religious Affections

Considered Edwards' most important work in distinguishing between a true work of God and the extremes of emotionalism and sensationalism that are known to accompany "revivals." The book is divided into three parts: 1.) Concerning the nature of the Affections, and their importance in religion; 2.) Showing that there are no certain signs that religious affections are gracious, or that they are not; 3.) Showing what are distinguishing signs of truly gracious and holy affections.
