In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries this work was the most universally read English book on devotion next toPilgrim's Progress. Joel Beeke concurs, writing, "John Brown of Wamphray (1610-1679) has been rightly called the most important Scottish theologian of his day.He was especially gifted at merging profound doctrinal truth with warm Christ-centered zeal and godly piety.Samuel Rutherfordwrote of him, 'I always [had]... a great love to dear Mr. John Brown because I thought I saw Christ in him more than in his brethren.'" 308 pages.

Considered Edwards' most important work in distinguishing between a true work of God and the extremes of emotionalism and sensationalism that are known to accompany "revivals." The book is divided into three parts: 1.) Concerning the nature of the Affections, and their importance in religion; 2.) Showing that there are no certain signs that religious affections are gracious, or that they are not; 3.) Showing what are distinguishing signs of truly gracious and holy affections.

Contains a historical sketch of Renwick's life, labours, and martyrdom, and a vindication of his character and testimony -- along with 63 of his letters (from July 8, 1682 to Feb. 17, 1688).

A sound, solid Calvinistic presentation avoiding the extremes of Pelagianism (as with Finney), Arminianism, (as with Wesley and the Vineyard movement) and blasphemous heresies of the Anabaptists.

The title continues (providing a nice summary for this rare valuable work): "Or, A Survey of our Saviour in His Soul-Suffering, His Loveliness in his Death, and the Efficacy thereof. In Which Some Cases of Soul-trouble in weak Believers, Grounds of Submission under the Absence of Christ, with the Flowings and Heightenings of free Grace, are opened. Delivered in Sermons on the Gospel according to John, Chap. xii. ver. 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33. Where are also interjected some necessary Digressions, for the Times, touching divers Errors of Antinomians; and a short Vindication of the Doctrine of Protestants, from the Arminian pretended Universality of Christ's Dying for All and every One of Mankind; the moral and feigned Way of irresistable Conversion of Sinners; and what Faith is required of all within the visible Church, for the Want whereof, many are condemned."

Watson, a master teacher concerning the practical aspects of the Christian's "heart life," explains how to vigorously pursue the high calling of the Christian life, and how to win the war with the world, the flesh and the devil. 173 pages.
