He has been growing in the faith since and he has recently adopted the classic Reformation position that the Papacy is the Antichrist or "Man of Sin" (cf. WCF 25:6). BENNETT, RICHARD Dominus Iesus: Rome Exalts Her Throne, A Verbal Reappearance of the Inquisition & A Kiss of Death for the Ecumenists (2000) BLAKENEY, R.P. Manual of Romish Controversy: Being a Complete Refutation of the Creed of Pope Pius IV A massive refutation of the superstition and heresy of the Roman harlot.Contains 24 chapters dealing with all the major (and many of the minor) points at issue between Rome and the Protestants.Contains much research that is hard to find elsewhere. BLAKENEY, RICHARD P. Protestant Catechism or Popery Refuted and Protestantism Established By the Word of God A great little (72 page) catechism which, in its days, sold over 128,000 copies. Addresses the major controversies with Romanism and much more. BRADFORD, JOHN Confutation of Four Romish Doctrines Part of a treatise, published abroad by the Protestant exiles during the reign of Mary, attributed primarily to the martyr Bradford. Shows how the Papists defend their major articles, for which they chiefly persecuted the Protestants, giving a refutation of each. BRADFORD, JOHN The Hurt of Hearing Mass CALVIN, JOHN Inventory of Relics DABNEY, ROBERT L. The Attractions of Popery DOUGLAS, THOMAS (Translator) Vitis Degeneris: or, The Degenerate Plant (1668) The title continues: "Being a Treatise of Ancient Ceremonies. Containing an Historical Account of their Rise and Growth, their First Entrance into the Church, and their Gradual Advancement to Superstition Therein. Written originally in French, but now, for general information and benefit, faithfully translated into English." Contains a fascinating "summary of those ceremonies whose original is reported in this history, according to the respective order of time wherein they had their rise" -- covering the period from 110 AD to 1470 AD. The mystery of iniquity has made much progress in the church since the writing of this book; but the foundations of defection were laid during the period covered herein. If we would pull out the idolatrous tree by its roots (in our battle against the inner darkness in the visible church), books like this offer a great deal of help. It deals with the corruption of the Lord's Supper (in the Mass), Romish holy days (like Easter), and many appendages of ecclesiastical Antichrist -- some which are now taught and practiced in churches which call themselves "Reformed." "But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up" (Matt. 15:13). 222 pages. GAVIN, ANTHONY The Great Red Dragon; Or the Master-Key to Popery (1854)Gavin was "formerly one of the Roman Catholic priests of Saragossa, Spain." This book was first published in 1724, and tells of Gavin's experiences in the late 1600s and early 1700s.In the preface Gavin notes that he feared for his life upon the publication of the book, as "the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus" (Rev. 17:6) continued to fill her ordained role in history, as a persecuting menace to the witnesses for God's truth. This book contains a detailed exhibition of the harlotries of Rome -- from a former insider -- as well as much information that is no longer readily available on the wickedness of the man of sin"Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God" (2 Thes. 2:4). 408 pages. HENRY, MATTHEW Popery, A Spiritual Tyranny HISLOP, ALEXANDER The Two Babylons or the Papal Worship Proved to Be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife (1916)Contrasts the distinctive characteristics of the truth with the lies and idolatry of the Roman antichrist. Chapters cover the "Objects of Worship," "Festivals," "Doctrine and Discipline," "Rites and Ceremonies," "Religious Orders," andthe development of the two systems considered "Historically and Prophetically." The prophetic section is especially interesting and shows how far Protestants have moved into Rome's camp concerning eschatology. The whole book, in fact, shows in a most explicit manner how much Romanism has infected the modern Protestant churches and their thinking. And as Hislop notes, "it has been known all along that Popery was baptised Paganism; but God is now making it manifest, that the Paganism which Rome has baptised is, in all its essential elements, the very Paganism which prevailed in the ancient literal Babylon, when Jehovah opened before Cyrus the two-leaved gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron." A welcome rebuke to those who would offer the right hand of fellowship to the "beast from the sea." 330 pages. KNOX, JOHN Against Romish Rites and Political and Ecclesiastical Tyranny (1554) VINKE, PETER Protestants Separated for Christ's Name's Sake (1675, reprinted 1845)Explains and defends the Reformers reasons for separation from Rome.Exhibits the major points of disagreement, these being the sufficiency of Scripture, the doctrines of grace (salvation), and purity of worship. Elaborates on each major area, explaining the numerous points of division specifically. WILKINSON, HENRY The Pope of Rome is Antichrist (1675, 1845 edition) WYLIE, J.A. Inspiration, Sola Scriptura, etc. ALEXANDER, ARCHIBALD Evidences of the Authenticity, Inspiration, and Canonical Authority of the Holy Scriptures (1838) The first part of the book thus argues for the reasonableness of Christianity in general, and Christian beliefs such as revelation, miracles, and the inspiration of the Bible in particular. The second part of the book deals with the canon of Scripture. It discusses how the books of the Old and New Testament were determined to be authentic, andwhy the Apocryphal books are not to be accepted as canonical.
